Owned and operated by Toronto music mogul Marv “Big Marv” Brown and Roy Fowl, Top Cat is Toronto’s premier urban entertainment company. A&R for Pologrounds Music and CEO of Top Cat Entertainment, Big Marv has constantly made music history. Since its’ inception in 1994, Top Cat Entertainment has catapulted themselves to the forefront of Toronto’s urban entertainment scene by providing the city with a series of exclusive events. Their signature events, Atlantis Sundays, which was co-promoted by NBA All-Star and BET late night host, John “Spider” Sally, played host to several major artists and gave birth to a whole new Toronto Nightlife.
Top Cat Atlantis
Top Cat Atlantis Sunday was Toronto’s most successful R&B club to date and on September 25, 2016, we celebrate the end of an era. Sold out each and every Sunday night, Faith Evans, Dru Hill, Funkmaster Flex, 702, Donell Jones, Case, 112, Soul for Real, Avant, Adina Howard and 69Boyz were among the many artists who graced Atlantis stage.
In addition to Atlantis Sunday, Top Cat produced the sold out “Top Secret Tour” at the Maple Leaf Gardens in 1997. Featured artists were R Kelly, LL Cool J, and Xscape. The success of the concert made history in the city. Top Cat Entertainment became the first independent promotion company to produce a major concert in Toronto. The concert had an attendance of over 16,000.
Top Cat Marketing
Also, in the spirit of their legacy of success, Top Cat recently introduced their newest entity – Top Cat Marketing. The primary objective of their marketing division is to provide the most efficient and effective routes of accessing Canada’s vast urban market. Their street team, which in clouds their all-female “Kitty Kat” promo team, is their principal medium of promotion. The in-house department specializes in every aspect of promoting and marketing, from the internet, to radio and retail promotion, to record pool servicing.
Top Cat Entertainment Presents…
As for the future of Top Cat Entertainment, the focus is on continuing to pioneer in the area of event coordination and production as with the 2009 Top Cat Entertainment’s Toronto premier of Tyler Perry’s The Marriage Counsellor. The debut Toronto success of the play lead to Tyler Perry’s successful screen adaptation “Temptation: The Confessions of The Marriage Counsellor” released in 2013.
In 2010 Top Cat Entertainment presented Oprah Winfrey’s Colour Purple the Musical at the Rose Theatre in Brampton Ontario. Grammy award winner Natalie Cole performed for a delighted audience for a limited engagement. The Colour Purple produced by Oprah Winfrey received 11 Tony Award nominations.
Also in 2010 Top Cat presented VIRTUOSITY: A song and dance revue, created by and starring renowned actress, singer, dancer and Tony Award Winner Vivian Reed. Ms. Reed sang and danced her heart out to rave reviews in a week long packed theatre at Toronto’s Bluma Appel Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
The 2011 Toronto presentation of the Tony Award winning musical FELA! was presented by Top Cat Entertainment at The Cannon Theatre. FELA! is the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation. This triumphant tale of courage, passion and love, features Fela Kutis captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony-Award winner Bill T. Jones.
Top Cat Entertainment, in August 2013 presented Africa Umoja in Toronto’s Elgin theatre for one week. The first week sold out in record time and was held over for a second successful week. The audience and media reviews were all feeling “The spirit of togetherness”.
90’s To Now
As Top Cat evolves so does the Top Cat story. Top Cat Entertainment is currently celebrating the closing of Atlantis Pavilions on September 25th and signing new artists for both Pologrounds and Top Cat Entertainment. Our talent work alongside top artists like A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, and more.
